The East India Company was appointed as the Diwan of Bengal on August 12th, 1765, by the Mughal Emperor. The event of granting Diwani rights to the company took place in Robert Clive’s tent. There were only a few Englishmen and, for witnesses, some Indians. In the Diwani rights, they got the financial administration of Bengal under their control. In a painting, the event of Robert Clive accepting the Diwani of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa from the Mughal ruler was shown as a majestic occasion in a grand setting. Robert Clive appointed the painter of that painting to record the moment, considered the most memorable event in the British imagination.
