The march began among women in Paris's marketplaces who were practically rioting over the steep price of bread on October 5, 1789. The turmoil became inextricably linked to the actions of rebels seeking liberal political transformations and a constitutional monarchy in France. The market women and their supporters eventually expanded into a horde of thousands. Driven by revolutionary agitators, they seized the city armoury for weaponry and marched towards the Palace of Versailles. The mob surrounded the palace and effectively pressed their demands on King Louis XVI in a fierce and violent clash. The throng forced the monarch, his family, and the majority of the French Assembly to return to Paris the next day.
