Detailed Solution

The above statement is false.
The Census of India in 2011 reported more than 1300 languages which people quoted as their mother tongues. These were further grouped under some major languages. Of these, 22 languages are in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and so are called 'Scheduled Languages'. The unlisted ones are called 'Non-Scheduled Languages'. The Constitution has not given the status of 'national language' to any language, but Hindi was recognized as the official language. States have official languages of their own. The government works of each state take place in their official language. The promotion of Hindi continues to be the Centre’s official policy. But this does not mean that it can impose Hindi on the states.
The correct statement would be There are 22 languages recognised as scheduled languages by the      Constitution.
