The Census of India in 2011 reported more than 1300 languages which people quoted as their mother tongues. These were further grouped under some major languages. Of these, 22 languages are in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and so are called 'Scheduled Languages'. The unlisted ones are called 'Non-Scheduled Languages'.
