A community of iron smelters called the Agarias lived in a village in central India. Some communities, such as the Agarias, were experts in the art of smelting iron. The dry regions of India were devastated by a series of famines in the late nineteenth century. Many of the Agaria iron smelters in Central India ceased operations, abandoned their villages, and migrated in search of other employment in order to survive the tough times. Many of them never again operated their furnaces. The Agarias contributed to the identification of an iron ore deposit that would later serve as a supply for the Bhilai Steel Plant.
