The Anglo-Burmese Wars (1824–26, 1852, and 1885) were a series of three wars that combined to put Burma (now Myanmar) in a precarious position from which it was compelled to recognise British control in the Bay of Bengal area. The First Anglo-Burmese War came to an official conclusion with the Yandabo Treaty (February 1826). A continuous struggle that lasted through two wet seasons was made feasible by India's superior resources, which contributed significantly to the British triumph. The British-led Indian armies, meanwhile, had lost more than 15,000 soldiers throughout the conflict. Both sides reached a deadlock when the British were unwilling to cooperate but also reluctant to go farther north. The battle then abruptly ended. All of Lower Burma was now under British control, although the Burmese court was not formally acknowledged.
