Small paintings known as miniatures are typically created in water colours on fabric or paper. The Mughal Emperors patronised this style of painting. Due to the decline of the Mughal Empire, painters of miniature paintings moved to regional centers where it was developed in the form of regional art. This art form very much influenced regional courts of Deccan and Rajputs. The Himalayan foothills around present-day Himachal Pradesh also witnessed the development of miniature art paintings. Till the late 17th century, this region had developed a bold and intense style of miniature painting known as Basohli. The most popular text which was painted here was Bhanudatta’s Rasamanjari. Hence, the Kangra school of painting was founded. By the mid-18th century, a new style was developed by Kangra artists. The source of inspiration for this was Vaishnavita traditions.
