The Consumer Protection Act(COPRA) came into the picture in 1986. This act organised the consumers’ movement. Under this act, the consumer courts follow three-tier machinery for solving consumer disputes. There are courts at the district, state, and national levels. The district courts resolve consumer disputes with claims up to 20 lakh, and the state-level courts deal with cases with claims of more than 20 lakh but less than one crore. The consumer cases with claims exceeding the value of 1 crore rupees go to the National level court.
