Governor-General Canning decreed that Bahadur Shah Zafar would be the last Mughal emperor and that after his death, none of his descendants would be recognized as kings; instead, they would be referred to as princes. In September 1857, the rebel forces were driven out of Delhi. Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, was tried in court and sentenced to life in prison. In October 1858, he and his wife, Begum Zinat Mahal, were imprisoned in Rangoon. In November 1862, Bahadur Shah Zafar died in the Rangoon jail. The recapture of Delhi, however, did not signal the end of the rebellion. People continued to fight and resist the British. The British had to fight for two years to defeat the massive Popular Rebellion forces.
