Summers are spent in the bugyals by the Gujjar cattle herders of Kumaon and Garhwal and winters in the bhabar. Jammu and Kashmir's Gujjar Bakarwals are pastoral nomads who travel in groups known as 'Kafila.' Cold and snow control their movements. These Gujjars migrate to the Shivalik range's low hills when the high slopes are blanketed with snow. These pastoralists return to the slopes when the winter melts, and the mountains become lush and green in the summer. The Gaddi Shepherds of Himachal Pradesh follow a similar pattern. They also spend winters in the lower Shivalik highlands and summers in Lahaul and Spiti.
