Qutbuddin Aibak constructed the first floor of Qutub Minar in 1199. The rest of the floors were built by Iltutmish around 1229. There are two bands of Arabic inscriptions beneath the balcony, and the surfaces are curved and angular. Only skilled craftspersons could place an inscription as such with accuracy and precision. Not many buildings were constructed using stones or bricks 800 years ago, so the Minar has been an architectural marvel for centuries. Unfortunately, lightning and earthquakes damaged the five-story high structure. However, repairs made by Muhammad Tughluq, Alauddin Khalji, Ibrahim Lodi, and Firuz Shah Tughluq salvaged it. Another architectural wonder of the Sultanate Period is the Quwwat al-Islam mosque.
