Industrial production in India could not work at full capacity till the end of the 19th century. The impetus to industrial production was provided by the first world war that started in 1914 and lasted till 1919. During this period the industries in England were engaged to produce war commodities. The manchester production was affected which gave impetus to textile industries in India to produce cloth. Further, the British asked Indian industries to produce war materials such as boots, leather jackets, jute bags, etc. Many new industries were established. The older industries ran double shifts. The demand for workers increased. The Indian industries found an opportunity in the first world war to prove their capacity.
