On April 10th, the police in Amritsar fired upon a peaceful procession, provoking widespread attacks on banks, post offices, and railway stations. As a result, martial law was imposed in Amritsar, and General Dyre took command. Later on April 13th, the infamous Jallianwalla Bagh incident took place. On this unfortunate day, a crowd of villagers had come to Amritsar to attend a get-together in the enclosed ground of Jallianwalla bagh. They were not aware of the Martial law imposed in Amritsar. General Dyre entered the bagh, closed the gate and opened fire on all the villagers, killing hundreds. Later, he stated that he opened fire to produce a moral effect, to create fear and terror in the minds of Satyagrahis.
