King Dhangadeva built the Kandariya Mahadeva temple in 999 AD to honour Shiva. The temple was characterised by its ornamented gateway, which led to a maha mandapa where dancers performed. The garbhagriha was the place for rituals where only the king, his close relatives, and priests gathered. The image of the chief deity was worshipped in the main shrine. Elaborately carved sculptures adorned the temples in the Khajuraho complex, where commoners were not granted entry. The main shikhara of the temple is 31 metres. Another architectural wonder is the Rajarajeshvara temple which King Rajarajadeva built to honour Rajarajeswaram. It had the tallest shikhara at the time, which measured more than 62 metres.
