The Mughals treated defeated Rajputs with dignity, allowing them to control their region (watan) and providing them with jobs outside their homeland. Watan Jagirs were the names given to these land distributions. During the Mughals, the owners of Watan Jagirs had much freedom. Many Rajput monarchs, particularly those from Amber and Jodhpur, served the Mughals honourably. In exchange, they were granted much freedom in their watan jagirs.
