The Mahanadi river rises from the highlands of Chhattisgarh, and after draining from Odisha state, it enters the Bay of Bengal, which is why it is an East flowing river. Its total length is 900 kilometres. This river has many tributaries, and some of the major tributaries are Seonath, Hasdeo, Ib, Ong, Tel, etc. One of the major dams also lies on this river, the Hirakud dam, and due to this, the river is also a major source of electricity & irrigation for the people of Odisha. Some cities which are near this river are Cuttack, Sonepur, etc.
