King Rajarajadeva built the Rajarajeshwara temple and dedicated it to Lord Shiva. Constructing the shikhara of the temple was no easy feat as it had a 90-tonne stone for the top, which was too heavy to lift manually. There were no machinery and cranes at the time as well. Therefore, the architects engineered an inclined path to solving the problem of lifting the stone. Workers achieved the task by placing the boulder on rollers and rolling it the entire way to the top of the temple. To prevent the path from becoming too steep, architects built the path 4 kilometres away from the building. Once the temple construction was completed, workers dismantled the inclined path. Today, a village called Charupallam exists near the temple, which means “Village of the Incline.”
