Relief plays a significant role. For example, the windward side of a mountain receives more rainfall than the leeward side. Because winds first face the windward (facing the wind direction) sides of the mountain and shower most of its moisture, they are left with little or no moisture for the leeward (facing opposite wind direction) side. This is why the Western ghats facing the coastal lines ( from where monsoon winds come) receive the most rainfall and have evergreen vegetation.
