The total length of the Mahanadi river is 900 K.m. It arises from Chhattisgarh, and after draining from Odisha state, it enters the Bay of Bengal, and that’s why it is an East flowing river. This river has many tributaries, and some of the major tributaries are Seonath, Hasdeo, Ib, Ong, Tel, etc. One of the major dams also lies on this river, the Hirakud dam, and due to this, the river is also a major source of electricity and irrigation for the people of Odisha. Some cities near this river are Cuttack, Sonepur, Sambalpur, etc.
