They extracted the ideals of affection and heroism found within the Sangam literature. There have been 63 Nayanars: Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar, and Manikkavasagar. There are two sets of compilations of their songs: Tevaram and Tiruvacakam; there have been 12 Alvars. The simplest were Periyalvar, his daughter Andal, Tondaradippodi Alvar, and Nammalvar. Their songs were compiled within the Divya prabandham.
