The Sangama dynasty's brothers, Harihara I and Bukka Raya I, who came from a pastoralist cowherd community of Yadava origin, formed it in 1336. Ultimately, Vijayanagar expanded to become an enormous empire in southern India. As a defence against invasion by the Muslim sultanates in the north, it aided in the reconstruction of Hindu life and governance after the upheavals and discord of the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1565, the capital of Vijayanagara was overthrown by a coalition of Muslim Sultanates of the Deccan after Aliya Rama Raya, its leader, was detained and put to death.
