Jesuit monks educated themselves in Konkani and published a number of pamphlets. By the year 1674, over fifty books had been printed in the Konkani and the Kanara languages. They printed the first Tamil book in 1579 at Cochin, and the first Tamil-English dictionary in 1713. They also printed a book in the Malayalam language.
