A popular stereotype about Muslims is that they are not interested in educating girls and do not send girls to school to study. But, research has shown that an important reason why Muslim girls are not sent to school or drop out of school after some years is poverty amongst them. Where an effort has been made to help the poor get educated, the Muslim community members have indicated an interest in sending their girls to school. In Kerala, for example, the distance between the school and the houses is not great. A good government bus service helps the teachers reach schools in remote rural areas, and over sixty per cent of them are female teachers. These factors have helped children from poorer families send them to school in much larger numbers, including Muslim girls. So, poverty, not religion, is the reason for the absence of Muslim girls from schools.
