They have to remove the human/ animal waste using brooms, baskets, or plates from dry latrines and have to carry that filth on their head to the disposal areas. A manual scavenger is a person who does this kind of job. Manual scavengers are paid significantly less to do these hazardous and inhumane jobs. They face serious health issues like eye irritation, skin infection, respiration, etc. Some records show that around one lakh Dalit women continue to work as manual scavengers in public and private dry latrines. Organisations like Safai karamchari Andolan organised many protests by the people of Andhra Pradesh to combat the ill jobs done by low caste people. These manual scavengers were considered untouchables in our society and were exposed to these subhuman work conditions andy faced severe hazards.
