Sri Lanka, due to majoritarianism, faces tensions between two communities; the Sinhala-speaking community and the Tamil-speaking community known as Srilankan Tamils. In 1956, by passing an act, the Sinhala language was recognized as the only official language of the nation, thus neglecting the Srilankan Tamils and their culture. Even the government partially favoured the Sinhala community regarding university admissions and government jobs. A new constitution declared ‘Buddhism’ as the official religion of the country. This ill-treatment against the Sri Lankan Tamils resulted in a civil war in the nation in which they demanded three things; to recognize Tamil as the official language, to provide them regional autonomy, and give them equal opportunities in terms of jobs, education, and other facilities.
