The central government passed the Scheduled Tribes and other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition Of Forest Rights) Act, 2006. This landmark legislation was made to address the problems and miserable living conditions of tribal people and other traditional forest dwellers who resided in forests from the times of their ancestors. The tribal people were unaware of their rights and also, and they were not recognised as such in the socio-political scenario. Thus, this act was passed in 2006 to vest forest land rights and forest occupation in the hands of forest dwellers and the tribes living in forests. This act not only gives the tribal people the right to reside in the forests but some other rights, like ownership rights and the right to collect and use forest resources and produce.
