The independence of the judiciary is very important for the proper functioning of a democracy. If the judiciary is under any pressure from any individual or organisation, it will not be able to render justice to the people. The judges are appointed by the President in consultation with other judges. They retire at the age of sixty-five in the Supreme Court and twenty-two in the High Courts. Judges can only be removed from their office by the Parliament through a process called impeachment on limited grounds of proven misbehaviour or incapacity. The salary of the judges can not be vetoed by the Parliament as it comes out of the Consolidated Fund of India.
