Detailed Solution

The above statement is true.
Article 17 of the Indian Constitution abolished untouchability and declared it a punishable offence. Untouchability was ill-treatment given to the Dalit community by way of stopping them from going to temples, enjoying public facilities, and living in main residential areas. This social evil was a danger to the fundamental rights of the Dalit community. These people were considered untouchables by our orthodox society as they used to work as manual scavengers and, thus, clean the dry latrines of the people by removing the human excreta using brooms and baskets and carrying them on their heads to the disposal area. But now, untouchability is a punishable offence, and whoever tries to do any practice of untouchability is punished with imprisonment for three months to 6 months and a penalty amount.
