Around the time Mahajanapadas emerged, people invented and applied two significant changes in agriculture. Firstly, the use of iron ploughshares grew in this period. Iron ploughshare allowed farmers to turn over heavy clay, which wasn't possible with a wooden ploughshare. As a result, the production of grains increased. Secondly, farmers began paddy transplantation. In paddy transplantation, farmers grew saplings and then planted them in the fields instead of scattering seeds on the ground, from which plants would sprout. This technique allowed most of the crops to survive and increased production. Slave men and women (dasas and dasis) and landless agricultural labourers (kammakaras) had to do the back-breaking work in fields.
