So, when the sepoys were commanded to go to Burma by water to fight for the company in 1824, they refused, even though they had consented to go by land. They were harshly punished, and because the issue did not go away, the company approved a new law in 1856 requiring every new individual who joined the company's army to pledge to serve overseas if necessary. The Sepoys, too, reacted to what was going on in the countryside. Many of them were peasants with families who lived in communities.
