Black soil is known for its fertility and clayey nature, which is ideal for growing cotton. It is thought that the parent rock material and the climatic conditions are the critical components in creating black soil. This type of soil, composed of lava flows, is typical of the Deccan trap (Basalt) area, distributed throughout the northwest Deccan plateau. They stretch in the southeast along the Godavari and Krishna rivers and cover the plateaus of Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Malwa, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
