The Company's administration differed from that of the Indian kings in the following ways:
1)      As administrative divisions, British colonies were divided into vast presidencies. There was a president from Bengal, Madras, and Bombay.
2)      Each was governed by a governor. In the government, the Governor-General held the position of the highest authority.
3)      A new judicial system was developed. Each district was supposed to have two courts: a civil court and a criminal court (faujdari Adalat) ( Diwani Adalat ). For the European district collectors who presided over civil cases, Maulvis and Hindu pandits translated Indian laws.
4)      Although the collectors were in charge of the criminal courts, a qazi and a mufti continued to preside over them.
5)      In an Indian district, the Collector was the most important person. His primary responsibility, as the title suggests, was to maintain peace and order in his district by collecting taxes, maintaining revenue, and working with judges, police, and darogas.
