The Maasai community lost all of its grazing grounds. Maasai land in 1885 was cut in half by an international boundary between Britain, Kenya, and German Tanganyika. There was a scramble for territories in Africa among the European colonies. After the division of land, the best grazing grounds were taken up by the white men who settled there. The Maasai people have left it a small piece of land. They lost 60% of their post-colonial land. They were pushed into land with arid land and less rainfall with poor pasture. Later on, they were forced by the colonial powers to turn their pasture land into cultivation fields.
