The British showed prejudice toward the Indian sepoys. The Indian sepoys were compelled to cross the sea to get to other British colonies like Burma and were not allowed to wear the sacred thread. Even though they performed the same labour, Indian and British sepoys did not receive the same pay. Indian sailors also received few promotions. Even if they did, they could not take positions of greater responsibility. Moreover, according to a new law passed in 1856, every recruit to the Company's army had to commit to serving overseas if necessary. Hence, Indian Sepoys were angry with the British Government.
