Peasants in Awadh stood up to talukdars and landlords' oppressive practices, such as greater revenue extraction, begar, recurring eviction of peasants, etc. Jawaharlal Nehru and Baba Ramchandra established Kisan Sabhas in Awadh to address peasant struggles and frustrations. In 1921, the peasant movement merged with Gandhi's non-cooperation campaign. However, the means of struggle used by peasants were diametrically opposed to Gandhi's beliefs.
