Punjab was under the rule of Sikhs in the 18th century. The Sikhs established themselves under misls. Punjab's strongman Ranjit Singh ruled with authority. Till he was the ruler of Punjab, the British didn’t interfere in the state. However, with the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839, the whole scenario changed. The states experience chaos due to weak successors and powerful nobles. Moreover, the fear of Russian expansion alarmed the British. The British wanted to secure the northwestern borders. As a result, there were Anglo-Sikh wars in the 19th century. Punjab was annexed by the British in the year 1849.
