In the second round table conference, the Depressed Class Association wanted a separate electorate for Dalits, which the British agreed to. However, this caused friction between Gandhiji and Ambedkar because Gandhi opposed the idea of a separate electorate and fasted until death. The matter was settled in 1932 with the Poona Pact, in which Ambedkar agreed to Gandhi's requirements. In turn, Dalits were given reserved seats in legislatures alongside the general voters.
