The need for workers increased as factories expanded. There were 584,000 workers in Indian factories in 1901. Over 2,436 000 people had been recorded by 1946. Workers typically came from the surrounding neighbourhoods in industrial areas. In quest of employment, peasants and artisans who could not find it in the hamlet flocked to the industrial hubs. In 1911, Ratnagiri, a neighbouring district, provided almost 50% of the labourers for the Bombay cotton industries, while the Kanpur district's textile mills mainly employed people from its villages. Most of the time, millworkers commuted between the city and the hamlet, coming home from harvests.
