Rigveda contains many prayers for cattle, children (especially sons), and horses. Warriors hitched up horses to chariots for use in battles. Groups indulged in battles to capture cattle, water resources, land for pasture, and grow hardy crops that ripened quickly, such as barley. Some groups got into combat to apprehend people. The leaders kept some of the wealth obtained in battles. They also gave some to the priests, and the rest got distributed amongst the people. Rulers used to put a part of obtained treasures for the performance of yajnas or sacrifices to gods and goddesses in which they made offerings into the fire like- ghee, grain, and in some cases, animals. The groups had no regular armies. People met and discussed matters of war and peace and chose brave and skillful leaders in assemblies.
