1)      Early in the nineteenth century, exports of British cotton products rose, and there was almost no import of cotton goods till the end of the eighteenth century.
2)      The imported cotton products were cheaper since they were manufactured by machines, making it difficult for weavers to compete. By the 1860s, weavers could not obtain enough supply of good quality raw cotton.
3)      Britain resorted to India when the American Civil War broke out and halted US cotton imports. The cost of raw cotton skyrocketed as India's natural cotton exports rose. Another issue encountered by the weavers was that India's factories started producing and flooded the market with machine goods.
