In French society, the clergy and nobility, who made up the first two estates, were born with special privileges. The third estate, which included peasants or common folk, was possibly the greatest of the other estates. The third estate was heavily burdened because the first and second estate members were free from paying taxes. The state and the church jointly collected these taxes through tithes and taille. They did, however, annually send a little present of cash to the government. In addition, people born into nobility had privileges over agrarian areas and were given preference when applying for jobs in the royal administration. The state did not grant any such privileges to the third estate.
