The East India Company procured regular supplies of cotton and silk from the Indian weavers by their paid supervisors called Gomasthas.
The East India Company appointed Gomasthas to supervise the weavers in India. They were the ones who had eliminated the existence of traders and brokers. They became the only link to the market without which weavers could not sell their goods. As they were outsiders, they did not sympathise with the weavers forced to sell the produce at a low cost. These Gomasthas were given full power to supervise and check the quality of the finished goods.
