On May 18, 1848, the Church of St. Paul hosted a meeting of the Frankfurt Parliament. The Parliament was the first elected Parliament of Germany. It was an all-German National Assembly which included middle-class professionals, businessmen and prosperous artisans. The group of members of this assembly drafted a constitution for the nation. Friedrich Wilhelm IV, King of Prussia, rejected the draft Constitution made by the Parliament. These reasons led to the disbandment of the Parliament in 1849.
