After the defeat of the Battle of Buxar, the Mughal emperor lost his political power and became a pensioner. Gradually, the British took steps to end the Mughal dynasty. First, they removed the name of the Mughal King from coins minted by the company. Then, in 1849, Governor-General Dalhousie declared that his family would shift from the Red Fort to another place in Delhi after the death of Bahadur Shah Zafar. And in 1856, Governor-General Canning declared that Bahadur Shah Zafar would be the last Mughal emperor. Finally, during the revolt of 1857, Delhi was recaptured from rebels, and Bahadur Shah Zafar and his wife were sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to prison in Rangoon, where he died.
