Detailed Solution

The above statement is False.
The pre-colonial trade operated through sea routes and was conducted through the ports of Surat, Hooghly, and Coromandel. Surat was a vibrant port on the Gujarat coast. India was dominant in textile exports to Europe in pre-colonial times. The local merchants controlled the trade. They connected the port town with the inland regions. This was done by procuring goods from weavers and carrying them to port cities. The domination of Surat was retained till the 18th century. Then, however, the East India Company established a colony in India. They set up new ports such as Kolkata and Mumbai. Due to the emergence of new ports, the port of Surat declined by the 1750s.
The correct statement would be, The port of Surat dwindled by the end of the 18th century.
