Vasco-Da-Gama discovered the sea passage to India. To the west coast of Africa, round the Cape of Good Hope, the first European ship sailed down there. Bypassing the Indian Ocean, the Portuguese had already set up their base in Goa, the western coast of India. Thus Vasco-Da-Gama discovered the maritime route to India in May 1498. He was the first sailor to arrive in Kozhikode, on the west coast of India. The Dutch and French traders also found a way to trade in India in the early seventeenth century.
