During the First World War, TISCO increased steel output thanks to a drop in British imports of iron and steel into India and expanded the steel market. Britain's steel industry was required to provide for the needs of the war during that time. Britain's steel exports to India consequently experienced a sharp decrease. To obtain rails at this time, the Indian Railways went to TISCO. As the conflict stretched for years, TISCO was forced to manufacture shells and carriage wheels. TISCO had to increase its production capacity and factory area to fulfil the conflict's needs. The colonial government purchased 90% of the steel produced by TISCO in 1919.
