By the end of the fifteenth century, the kingdom of Kamata (Kamrup) was in decline. It was succeeded by the kingdom of Kuch (Cooch Bihar), which ruled across north Bengal and western Assam and maintained its policy of hostilities with the Ahoms. In 1663, the Ahoms in the northeast were vanquished. In the 1680s, there was another uprising. With the aid of Kuch forces, the Mughals subdued and conquered the western Assam valley up to Bar Nadi in 1612. The Kuch leader became a vassal of the Mughals. The Ahoms, who governed eastern Assam across the Bar Nadi, also came into contact with the Mughals. After a protracted conflict with the Ahoms, who had taken in a prince from the vanquished dynasty, a treaty was reached with them in 1638 that established the Bar Nadi as their border with the Mughals. Gauhati (Assam) thus became a Mughal province.
