Russia suffered grave consequences during the First World War. From 1914 to 1916, Russia's armies suffered heavy defeats in Austria and Germany. By 1917, the death toll had risen to almost 7 million. To stop the enemy from settling on the territory, the Russian troops burned dwellings and crops as they withdrew. The industry also suffered greatly as a result of the conflict. Railway infrastructure started to deteriorate in 1916. Flour and bread became scarce for those living in cities. Riots at bakeries had become widespread by the winter of 1916.
