Western disturbances cause rainfall during winters in the northwestern part of India.
Western disturbances influence the weather conditions in the north and northwest of India. They are cyclonic, moisture-laden winds originating in the Mediterranean sea. By mid-October, the southwest monsoon starts to withdraw from the Indian subcontinent. The westerlies are the driving force behind these cyclonic storms causing sudden rain in winter. This rainfall is extremely useful in the cultivation of rabi crops. The western disturbances are quite strong in northern Pakistan and cause winter floods. The 2013 floods in North India are a result of the heavy precipitation caused due to the interaction of the monsoons and the western disturbances. Sometimes, excessive rainfall due to the western disturbances may result in floods, landslides, and crop destruction.
