Rinderpest originally appeared in Africa in the late 1880s. Italian troops invading Eritrea in East Africa were fed on infected cattle imported from British Asia. Rift Valley Fever entered Africa from the east and spread westward 'like forest fire' until it in 1892 reached Africa's Atlantic coast. Five years later, it arrived at Cape, which is the southernmost point of Africa. 90% of the cattle were killed by rinderpest along the way.
